Introducing Our First MCP Server for N-able Cove Data Protection

Tech Centre is proud to announce our newest innovation: a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server purpose-built for N-able Cove Data Protection. This gives us direct, structured access to your backup environment in real time - enabling smarter monitoring, faster issue resolution, and more transparent reporting.

Actual Use Cases:

1. Instant Failover Alerts with Root Cause Insights

Problem: Backup failures are often buried in daily logs or missed until it’s too late.

Use Case:
The MCP server detects a failed overnight backup for a client's server.
Instead of just logging the failure, it:

  • Extracts the failure code and log excerpt,

  • Identifies the specific file that caused the error,

  • Creates a PSA ticket with all technical detail,

  • AI can make automated decisions about what steps to take next or assigns it to the backup specialist, not Level 1.

Impact:
Our team fixes issues faster, without needing to log into Cove manually or escalate blindly. 

2. Missed Backup Detection for Inactive Devices

Problem: Technicians often miss when backups silently stop because a device was renamed, decommissioned, or replaced.

Use Case:
The MCP server scans expected vs. actual backup job activity across the last 72 hours.
It flags a domain controller that hasn’t run a job and isn’t marked decommissioned.

The system:

  • Creates a PSA ticket,

  • Includes last seen date, device hostname, and backup profile,

  • Tags the assigned tech for follow-up.

Impact:
Prevents silent backup gaps, avoids embarrassing data loss situations, and improves MSP reliability.

3. Tiered Alerting Based on Business Priority

Problem: Not all backup failures are created equal - but most tools treat them the same.

Use Case:
The MCP provides our AI with the backup rules to determine the business priority of each device.
For example:

  • Failed backup on a production SQL server → high-priority alert + SMS + ticket.

  • Missed backup on an intern’s laptop → lower-priority PSA ticket, no escalation.

Impact:
Reduces alert noise while keeping critical systems under tight control - your team focuses on what really matters.

4. Insightful Reporting

Problem: Obtaining insightful reports on machines or clients is difficult to extract from standard reports and often requires different source reports to gain a proper picture

Use Case:
Our MCP allows our techs to ask questions about machines and clients instead of spending time digging through reports
